Those who love citrus often live in anticipation of the month of January – Honeybell season. Some people consider the Honeybell (also known as the Minneola Tangelo) to be the ultimate citrus fruit – incredibly sweet and unbelievably juicy.
Honeybells first came into existence in the 1930s in Orlando, as a cross between a Duncan Grapefruit and a Dancy tangerine, and was named for the town of Minneola, Florida. The name comes from its unique shape – the "nipple" formation at the stem, which gives it a bell-like shape. Their bright, red-orange skin is looser than that of a traditional orange and therefore is easier to peel, making it great for lunchboxes or meals on the go. The flesh is extremely sweet and one Honeybell can almost supply a full-sized glass of juice!
The nutrition in a Honeybell surpasses most citrus fruit:
- High in Vitamins A and C, which are both proven to boost the immune system and the metabolism of food
- Rich in nutrients such as calcium for healthy bones and teeth
- Contain fiber and protein to help promote good muscle and tissue construction.
